These procedures help to build a functional lip and palate, aid in appropriate speech development, reduce middle ear difficulties, reduce social stigmas, and aid in proper tooth and facial bone development. Your child will be put under general anesthetic for cleft lip surgery (asleep and not feeling pain). For the cleft lip surgery, the tissues will be trimmed and the lip will be stitched together by the surgeon. For the cleft palate surgery, the soft palate can be covered with tissue from the roof of the mouth. A child’s palate may require more than one operation to close.
