Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth (also known as third molars) are the last teeth that erupt in your mouth and appear between the ages of 17-20 years old.
Wisdom teeth roots can become entangled with sensory nerves in the lower jaw or the sinus area of the upper jaw as patients mature, so it is best to pre-emptively have X-rays at age 16-20 to assess possible need for extraction(s) and properly time the surgery before the integrity of the nerves or sinuses is threatened. It is suggested that wisdom teeth are removed before the age of 26 or as soon as x-rays show that the teeth will not erupt properly.
If wisdom teeth become an issue later, extraction will be more difficult and prone to complications. An impacted tooth is one that hasn’t fully grown in and is unable to break through the gums due to a lack of space. In some cases a cyst can grow adjacent to the wisdom teeth, which can also lead to more serious issues as it hollows down the jaw and affects nearby nerves, teeth and other parts of the mouth. A panoramic radiograph needs to be taken prior to the surgery. If any of the wisdom teeth are impacted or close to the nerve then a 3D radiograph needs to be done to mitigate potential adverse surgical outcomes, including permanent nerve damage or sinus issues.
