Dental Implants
Dental implants are being used to replace lost teeth. Dental implants are a long-term tooth replacement that are surgically embedded in your jawbone to allow you to function similarly as you would with natural teeth. Dental implants, unlike fixed bridges or detachable dentures, do not impact nearby healthy teeth or cause jaw bone loss.
Dental implants can last a lifetime if properly cared for. As they are constructed of titanium, which merges with the jawbone in a process known as osseointegration.
Additionally, replacement of a tooth root with a dental implant allows the chewing forces to be transmitted into the bone which has been proven to decrease the amount of bone resorption that naturally occurs when a tooth is lost; this has functional as well as cosmetic significance. Dental Implants offer patients who have lost permanent teeth an alternative to the discomfort and sub-optimal appearance of wearing dentures or bridges. Receiving dental implants is a long term procedure, consisting of two surgical phases that extend over approximately 4-6 months, and involves both your oral and maxillofacial surgeon as well as a restorative dentist or prosthodontist.
The first surgical phase includes placement of the implants into the bone of the jaw, under the gums, where they integrate with the bone over a period of 4-6 months. Following this, the second surgical procedure occurs, during which the gums are reopened and abutments for the artificial teeth are attached to the implants. Artificial teeth (crowns) will be placed by your restorative dentist once the area has fully healed.
