Immediately after an extraction of a tooth, the body recognizes that there is a missing tooth in the region and stops preserving the nearby tissues. This makes it difficult to put in dental implants later on, thus requiring surgical intervention. Immediately after the bone is pulled out, donor bone is added into the region (typically cadaver bone) to prevent the region from degrading. Through the weeks following the procedure, the tissue in the region will grow normally and, after about 6 months, the site will be ready for the placement of a dental implant.
