Exposure of Impacted Teeth
A tooth is impacted when it is embedded in bone and/or the gum tissue and is unable to erupt into the proper position.
There may be several reasons why a tooth is impacted, some of the main ones being that:
- Baby teeth are not falling out in time
- The pathway of the tooth is obstructed due abnormal tissues, cysts, or misaligned adjacent teeth
- The teeth surrounding the the impacted tooth are misaligned
- Occasionally there is an extra (supernumerary) tooth blocking the path of the impacted tooth
In order to remove the tooth, the surrounding teeth are adjusted by an orthodontist to make room for the tooth to erupt into the proper position. Next, the patient is treated by an oral surgeon, who makes a small incision in the gum and then a chain and/or orthodontic bracket is attached to the impacted tooth to guide it into the correct position.
